Where does the money go?

user avatar Posted by Mike Storrs on 04/16/2014 at 09:04 pm
You may be asking yourself, “What does the club do with my membership money?” If you haven’t had a chance to attend a board meeting, you may not know all the functions of the club. Our first mission is to grow the sport, and we do that through our nightly tag matches that you can find listed on the home page. This is how most of our members are introduced to the club and the membership comes with a tag. All of our tag masters are volunteers and are not compensated for their time.

The next level is our PDGA sanctioned events. Each of these events requires PDGA sanctioning fees as well as minimum added cash requirements for some tiers. In an effort to bring more money into the tournaments, the club voted this year to minimize the player pack and direct that money towards our events based on tier status. Mile High Disc Golf Club runs 8 PDGA sanctioned events. Our A tiers are High Plains Challenge in Fort Morgan in June and the Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championships which will take place on a Bi-annual schedule starting in 2015. Our B tier is Johnny Roberts Memorial in September and we run 5 C tiers. Spring Fling Pro and Am, Mile High Classic Pro and Am, and Melon Madness.

Another area where the money goes is into our improvement and project funds. We currently have course funds for Johnny Roberts, Birds Nest, Lighthouse and Boulder course. We also support or run several non sanctioned events, including RODNOC, OPXE and Brighton Legacy Tournament. The last fund is our Junior fund which will allow us to fund junior events and clinics. Keep an eye out for some great opportunities for the kids this summer with MHDGC.

We encourage all members to reach out if they have an idea for an event, project, course, improvement, etc. We are here to serve our members, without you, there is no club.

2014 Ice Bowl

user avatar Posted by Mike Storrs on 04/16/2014 at 09:04 pm
The 2014 Ice Bowl was a tremendous success as Jay and Michelle Burghardt took over TD duties this season. The Mile High Disc Golf Club supports the Food Bank of the Rockies and all Ice Bowl proceeds go directly to the Food Bank. A large portion of the donation comes from Winter Warriors, a 13 week long random doubles series run by Ray Woodruff and Jeff McCormack. The remainder was collected leading up to the Ice Bowl at Colorado Heights University and during the silent auction and awards at Broken Tee Golf Course. Thanks to a last minute donation, the club proudly presented a check to the Food Bank for $20,000. The donation will provide 80,000 meals to families in the Rocky Mountain region. Is 2015 the year we break $25,000?

Spring Fling Wrap Up

user avatar Posted by Mike Storrs on 04/16/2014 at 09:04 pm

The Mile High Disc Golf Club kicked off its tournament season this weekend at Spring Fling, a PDGA C-tier event, in Larkspur, CO. The Professional and Amateur pools were split into separate days with the Ams getting the luck of the draw on the weather. Jellystone Disc Golf Course in Larkspur was the host site for the event as 162 players swarmed the area over the weekend.

The largest Am division on a beautiful Saturday was Advanced Men (MA1) and after the first round there was a tie for the lead with Kyle Harrigan and Aaron Grunwald both shooting 994 rated rounds (-8). Grunwald followed up his solid play from the morning by tying the hot afternoon round of 49 to take home the victory by two strokes over Harrigan. Ben Ray moved into third place with a 49 as well in the second round and a two round total of 99.

Advanced Women (FA1) had a tight battle down to the finish between Christy Mullins and Gail Pace. Mullins took a one stroke lead into the second round and was able to hold on for a 3 stroke victory.

2014 Spring Fling Amateur Champions

MA1- Aaron Grunwald FA1 – Christy Mullins MM1- Jeff Evertz FM1 – Karen Sattler MG1 – Dave Suger MA2 – Jason Heimark FA2 – Sandra Richardson MA3 – Anthony Sharp FA3 – Chistina Copeland
MJ2 – Gage Buckethal

On the Pro side, 72 brave souls came out to test their skills in the wind, snow and sleet. In the Men's Open division, Tabernash resident Tom Carrillo came firing out of the gates in the morning, posting a 1066-rated 10 under par first round to give him a 3 stroke lead over defending champion Joe Rovere and 2014 winner Rob Nichols.

The second round started just as Mother Nature unleashed her fury. Blinding snow and biting winds would increase the second round scores considerably. Fort Collins’ Tyler Liebman would shoot the hot second round, a 1036-rated four under par round, but it would only be good enough for second place as Carrillo held on for a one shot win and a hefty $560 check for his efforts.
